Edo governor set to register northerners in the state – Adeola Opeyemi Naija.com

The unconstitutionality of such a proposal is breathtaking. Blaming foreigners is the refuge of the lazy politician. The culture of cattlemen and the demands of modern times and the general lawlessness in the country is the crux of the matter.
All Nigerians have a constitutional right of movement in all of Nigeria and any attempt to mass register any identified ethnic group is a bar to such rights.

How about registering all Edo people so as to stem the influx of prostitutes into Europe. Such thinking is beneath any decent government and anchored in past times such as the 19th century.

– Edo state governor has approved that northerners in the state should be registered
– The governor said this will reduce violence allegedly perpetrated by non-indigene
– He said violence are not perpetrated by herdsmen but impersonators who pretends to be herdsmen
Edo state government has announced its plan to register northerners living in the state to reduce violence allegedly being perpetrated by herdsmen impersonators.
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary of the state, John Mayaki, Governor Godwin Obaseki has approved the registration and the process will comment soon.
In a report by Daily Post, Obaseki reportedly announced this to members of Arewa community in the state.
The governor met the northern group led by its President General, Alhaji Sahabi Umar at Government House, Benin on Thursday night, before announcing the plan to register the northerners.
The governor urged Arewa community in the state to embrace the diversity which exists in Nigeria and forge a united bond.
He said that no true Fulani herdsman would abandon his cattle and take to killing of innocent farmers; rather, the recent cases violence were perpetrated by foreign elements bent on causing conflict.
He said “To checkmate the ugly trend, a committee will be set up to carry out community by community delineation of northern settlers across the state to help identify new comers and their aims.”
On the issue of grazing, Obaseki noted that fenced grazing areas with watering facilities would be clearly defined by government for herdsmen to feed their cattle with payment of economic fees for services rendered.
The governor assured of fair treatment in spite of religious differences, acknowledging intermarriage has made them stakeholders in Edo.
Earlier in his remarks, President of Arewa community in Edo, Alhaji Umar appreciated the governor for breaking fast with them and stated that Arewa community was unhappy with recent attacks as it was giving them a bad name.
Alhaji Umar pledged to support government in identifying and dealing with bad elements amongst the Fulani.
Meanwhile, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue has continued with sleepless nights over the best way to resolve the burning issue of Fulani herdsmen attacks in his state.
This time, against accusations, Ortom insisted that his administration followed due process in the passage of the anti-open grazing prohibition bill which was recently signed into law.
Speaking through his senior special assistant on media, Mr Godwin Akor, in Makurdi, the state’s capital, Governor Ortom warned those who are not satisfied with the new law to head to court.
