Political Legacy
Chief Daniel Osikheme Orbih (1961–2026) left a distinctive imprint on Edo State and South-South politics over more than two decades. His career combined long organisational control of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo, a reputation for aggressive opposition politics, loyalty to established party structures, and later alignment with the Wike political network.
Formative Years and Rise
Orbih entered elective politics as the All People’s Party (APP) deputy governorship candidate in the 1999 Edo election. After that outing he accepted an invitation from Chief Tony Anenih and joined the PDP. Anenih treated him as a political son; that relationship opened doors, including a seat on the NNPC Group Board and progressive elevation within the party.
He became Edo State PDP Chairman after the death of Chief Samson Ekhabafe and held the position for roughly a decade (approximately 2009–2020). This made him one of the longest-serving state party chairmen in Nigeria during that period. Under his leadership the Edo PDP retained organisational coherence while in opposition to successive APC administrations led by Adams Oshiomhole and, later, Godwin Obaseki’s first term.
Opposition Leadership
Orbih was widely regarded as one of the most active and confrontational opposition chairmen of his era. He repeatedly challenged the Oshiomhole administration on governance issues, including the attempted sale of Edo House in Lagos and other alleged excesses. He framed his role as preventing authoritarian tendencies and keeping the PDP relevant as a credible alternative.
Electoral results during his chairmanship were mixed but notable given the APC’s control of the state government: the PDP repeatedly carried Edo in presidential elections (including for Goodluck Jonathan and Atiku Abubakar) and secured strong National Assembly performances—two Senate seats and a majority or near-majority of House of Representatives seats in successive cycles.
The Obaseki Era and the Legacy Group
The relationship with Godwin Obaseki proved pivotal and ultimately corrosive. Orbih and the old PDP structure helped deliver Obaseki’s 2020 re-election after the latter’s fallout with the APC. Once in office, Obaseki moved to assert control over the party, sidelining many of the pre-2020 leaders.
Orbih responded by consolidating the “Legacy Group” (sometimes called Legacy PDP or Legacy Coalition)—the network of founding and long-standing PDP members who felt displaced. This group became the principal internal opposition to Obaseki within the Edo PDP. Tensions escalated into parallel structures, suspensions, and open rivalry. By the 2023–2024 cycle the Legacy Group largely withheld support from Obaseki’s preferred candidates, contributing to the PDP’s weak performance in Edo and the eventual APC recovery of the governorship under Monday Okpebholo in 2024.
Later Career and Cross-Party Ties
After leaving the state chairmanship, Orbih served as PDP National Vice Chairman (South-South). He remained a visible ally of Nyesom Wike and continued to lead the Legacy Group’s efforts to reclaim influence in Edo. In late 2024 Governor Okpebholo appointed him Chairman of the Governing Council of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma—an unusual cross-party institutional role that reflected both his stature and the pragmatic alliances that characterised the post-2024 landscape.
He continued to criticise the Obaseki-era management of the PDP, accusing it of destroying the party’s internal cohesion and electoral strength. Parallel congresses and competing claims of legitimacy persisted into 2025–2026.
Style and Reputation
Supporters described him as disciplined, loyal to hierarchical party structures, and effective at keeping the PDP organisation alive under difficult conditions. Critics, particularly from the Obaseki camp, portrayed him as obstructionist and, in the final years, as aligned with forces outside the mainstream PDP. His willingness to work across party lines in the later period (notably the AAU appointment) added complexity to his image.
Enduring Impact
Orbih’s longest-lasting contribution was organisational: he sustained a functional PDP structure in Edo through more than a decade of opposition and then became the focal point of resistance to what many older members saw as the capture of the party by a new entrant. The Legacy Group he led remains a recognisable political current in Edo even after his death.
His passing on 31 August 2026 removed a central figure who had bridged the Anenih era, the long opposition years, the Obaseki rupture, and the post-2024 realignments. Condolences from both the APC state government and Wike’s network underscored the breadth of relationships he maintained.
In sum, Orbih’s legacy is that of a durable party organiser and opposition strategist whose career both strengthened and later fractured the Edo PDP, leaving a lasting imprint on the state’s political alignments.
